If only we could live a life where stress didn't affect us.
Unfortunately, we live in the real world, where every day, we are faced with challenges that cause us to feel stress. At work, we can fall under enormous pressures to achieve, and that can create feelings of stress in us, resulting in high blood pressure, headaches, and panic attacks. We might even face stress at home, in some of the ways we discussed in this article. If we don't get on top of the stress we feel, our health will deteriorate. We have already mentioned some of the common symptoms of stress, but there are others, including depression, bodily pains, and skin rashes.
Chances are, you may be feeling some of the effects of stress today. If so, we would like to repeat our title…
Don't let stress get the better of you!!
There are ways to combat the problem, and we will discuss some of them here.
See your doctor
It's a no brainer we know, but how many of us actually visit our doctor regularly enough? If you're feeling unwell because of the stress in your life, go and get the help you need. Just talking to him or her might be enough to relieve some of the stress you are feeling, though your doctor might also prescribe medication to help you, such as something to help you sleep if your stress is keeping you awake at night, and something along the lines of cyclosporine treatment if the stress in your life is bringing you out with a skin condition such as psoriasis. Your doctor might suggest you see a counsellor as well; a professional person who will help you deal with the stressors in your life through stress-management therapy. Make that phone call today if you know stress is threatening to get the better of you.
Take control of your stressors
We don't know what your stressors are, but in most situations, there are usually answers to minimize or eliminate them. If you are working too many hours, for example, you might want to have a conversation with your employer. If a particular person causes you stress, you should, if possible, reduce the contact you have with them. If the clutter in your home exacerbates the stress you feel, you should do the sensible thing and tidy your home. A tidy home is a tidy mind, after all, so check out these decluttering tips if this applies to you. So, think. List your stressors and then formulate an action plan to vanquish them.
Unfortunately, stress can perpetuate unhealthy living. It can cause us to reach out for unhealthy comfort foods. It can make us stay in bed for longer than we should. It might even give us reason to smoke or drink more alcohol than we should. Don't let this happen to you. When you fall prey to any of these unhealthy ways of living, your health will suffer, and the stress you feel will continue. Instead, focus on a healthy lifestyle. Get out of the house and into the fresh air, as this can improve your state of mind. Do some form of exercise, as the feel-good chemicals in your brain will start to kick in when you get active. And eat stress-busting foods, as while they won't defeat your stressors, they will strengthen your mind and body to help you deal with them.
We can't escape stress, but we don't have to let it get the better of us. Follow our suggestions then, especially if you are struggling with any stressors at the moment. A call to your doctor, a plan of action, and a healthier lifestyle might be all it takes to improve your life before stress takes over.
