My Tips for an Affordable Trip to Spain

April 17, 2018

My recent time spent traveling in Spain was full of ups and downs, but it was ultimately a memorable experience. One of the best things about Spain is that it's so affordable to travel there. I know that a lot of people worry about the affordability of traveling, whether it's a week-long vacation or they want to travel for six months or more. But it doesn't have to be expensive, and I love looking for ways to make the most of my time anywhere. If you're smart, you can even take tours and do plenty of activities without spending too much.

Getting There

If you're based in the US, getting to Spain is likely to be your biggest expense. The closer you are to the East Coast, the more affordable it's likely to be. Transatlantic flights are never going to be cheap, but they don't have to be super expensive either. Comparing flight prices using a site like is one of the smartest things you can do. You can set up alerts on some sites to let you know when cheaper tickets come up too. You might notice a difference between destinations too, so remember that it's pretty easy to go from one place to another in Spain.

Getting Timing Right

Timing is everything whenever you're traveling. If you're planning a trip to Spain, it's obvious that everywhere will be busier at the height of summer. During the summer, people from certain places in Europe, including the UK and Germany, are especially keen to come for a beach vacation. It's sometimes a good idea to check when schools are out in these countries too because prices can go up during these periods. If you choose to visit Spain in the fall or winter, you can still find that the weather is perfectly pleasant. I was there in November, and there was still plenty of sunshine.

Traveling Around

Getting around Spain isn't too difficult. It's one of the largest European countries, but it's about the same size as Texas. It also has a number of options for affordable travel. You can take trains or buses between cities for low prices, and public transport is good in some cities too. is a popular service to use in Spain, which is a carpooling/rideshare app that you might want to try out. Although, obviously take any precautions you would usually take while traveling with strangers!

Food and Drink

The food and drink in Spain are one of the main reasons people love to visit. Even for picky eaters, there's a lot on offer that you can try. Eating tapas is a great way to get a good meal for not much of anything, and it gives you lots of choices. In some places, you can get free tapas with your drinks, which means you can have pretty much a whole meal if you drink enough.

An affordable trip to Spain is easy if you know what you're doing. Some planning can help you make the most of your budget.
